Urgent care services
Responding to feedback on people’s use of North Mid’s A&E
In 2018 Healthwatch Enfield carried out some research which found that large numbers of people were using A&E at North Middlesex University Hospital when they could perhaps have been seen and treated elsewhere. They published their findings in a report on their website.
What are we doing?
To act on the insight from patients and Healthwatch in the report, a communications action group was set up. The group includes North Mid, Enfield and Haringey CCGs and local Healthwatches.
The group has produced a very short and visual leaflet which aims to represent the alternative options for unplanned care around North Mid. The leaflet is now available in A&E to support staff to raise awareness of alternative options for follow-up/’next time’ conversations.
We have also commissioned Healthwatch Haringey to do some targeted engagement with our community in response to the Healthwatch Enfield report findings. We have chosen Turkish speaking communities and parents of young children as two groups to trial this community engagement-led approach with, in order to respond to some of the findings in the report.
Healthwatch are using the leaflet to guide a number of targeted communications and face to face conversations with individuals and groups in Haringey. This includes visits to children’s centres, parent and toddler groups and mosques with a large number of Turkish worshippers, as well as meeting and briefing key leaders within the Turkish community to share messages via word of mouth.
This work is also being supported by a communications campaign which includes mailshots to all schools in the east of the borough and postings on community blogs and online forums.
We will be evaluating this work in April 2019 and will update our website then.
