Haringey’s new end of life care service

Haringey’s new end of life care service

Haringey CCG worked with Healthwatch Haringey, the Haringey Palliative Care team and the Haringey Forum for Older People to launch Haringey’s new palliative care service at a special event in May.

Over 150 local people attended Let’s talk about dying, on Friday 13 May at the Tottenham Town Hall, to find out more about the new service, as well as, get information about a range of other support services available to help them think about their end of life options and arrangements.

The new Haringey Palliative Care Team is an innovatively integrated community service provided jointly by North Middlesex University Hospital, North London Hospice, St Joseph’s Hospice, Marie Curie Hospice Hampstead and Whittington Health.

Professionals work closely together to ensure that patient care is consistent, be it in hospital, at home or in a nursing home or hospice, and that information about what is important to each patient is shared between those different settings.

Other services in attendance at the event included Compassion in Dying, Alzheimer’s Society, Marie Curie, Macmillan Cancer Support, dementia services, local hospices and funeral directors.

The event, which was opened by David Lammy MP for Tottenham, also had a local solicitor on hand who offered legal advice, the Citizens’ Advice Bureau who provided financial advice, and free health checks throughout the day.

Local people found out how to plan their ‘digital legacy’, create a ‘memory box’ for their family and friends, talk to their children about dying and discovered a variety of options for funerals too.

Let’s talk about dying was held as part of Dying Matters Awareness Week, a national campaign which helps to highlight the importance of talking about dying, death and bereavement.

The Haringey Palliative Care Team operates seven days a week and is available 24 hours for patients in the community. The service has:

  • Dedicated phone and email system for enquiries and referrals, staffed by the triage team at North London Hospice, Monday – Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm:
    Telephone: 020 8343 8841
    Email: triage.team@nhs.net
  • An out of hours telephone advice service operating 5:00pm–9:00am, seven days a week, for advice to professionals and to patients or their relatives: 07957 588273
