Individual Funding Requests
Can I get this treatment on the NHS?
This section explains how NHS Haringey Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) makes decisions about providing treatments that are not normally available through the National Health Service (NHS).
Like any other organisation, the NHS has limited resources and we have a duty to manage them carefully.
This means we have to:
- look at the clinical reasons for exceptionality in individual cases;
- look at evidence for the safety and effectiveness of any treatment; and
- ensure that the services we pay for will give patients the greatest health gains from the resources we have.
We have a policy that sets out the principles behind our decisions on individual treatments. It also explains the system we have for processing each request for treatment. This policy is called The Individual Funding Request Process Policy (IFR Policy - available in the downloads section).
Procedures of Limited Clinical Effectiveness (PoLCE)
There are some treatments that are not routinely funded on the NHS because they have low clinical or cost effectiveness. These treatments are set out in a policy called the Procedures of Limited Clinical Effectiveness (PoLCE) policy (available in the downloads section). Examples include cosmetic surgery or treatment, complementary or alternative therapies, treatment for snoring and reversal of sterilisation.
To secure NHS funding for a PoLCE treatment, GPs must send an application form on their patient’s behalf to the IFR team, demonstrating how the patient meets the criteria set out in the policy. If the patient does not meet the criteria, but the GP can demonstrate how the patient is clinically exceptional (different to other patients with the same condition), the application can be escalated to an IFR panel and a decision made under the principles set out in the Haringey CCG IFR policy.
